Which is better, teamwork or individual work?

This is a question that very often pops up in our minds, especially students. College students are constantly competing with each other with an aim to score more, do better in examinations, campus placements, get a better job and other aspects. It is more about individual growth and success.

However, in today’s troubled times, more people will agree that teamwork is what brings success to any task, whatever be the project. ‘Two heads are better than one’, the popular saying rings true in these stressful times. We can see how people from all walks of life are unified in their fight against Covid-19. Whether it is vaccine development or providing healthcare to millions of people, nothing could have been possible without teamwork.

So the first and foremost transformation for a student, from college life to real life, is to work in teams along with others, i.e., the transformation from I to WE.

Teamwork is the perfect solution when you are facing a huge, complicated project that needs to be completed within a short time frame. If you look at the top organizations worldwide, you will find that teamwork is the main reason they could achieve so much in less time. We may feel there are several advantages to working independently, but with teamwork, we can achieve a lot more in a quicker time.

Different Ways How Teamwork Can Benefit Us

Let us study some of the key benefits that teamwork can generate.

1.   Helps Generate More Ideas

When a team gets together for brainstorming sessions, it leads to the birth of many great ideas. On the other hand, an individual handling a project may lack the clarity to focus and may fail to generate solutions. When people with different skill sets and backgrounds come together, several creative ideas can develop within minutes.

2.   Solves Problems Easily

To solve any problem, you have to look at it from different angles. When different minds come together to work together, they can come up with the best solutions.  Any solution that arises from such varied viewpoints will be very effective. He or she may make a decision that will be one-sided and may not be beneficial to all. It is better in such situations to tackle a problem as a team so that you can develop a win-win solution. It also leads to better planning as the final decision is taken with the best alternative decided by the team.

3.   Reduces your Stress

When an individual tries to tackle an issue alone, there is a lot of pressure. But, when you work as a team, the pressure is divided, and no individual has to take the sole responsibility. If something goes wrong, you can work closely with your team members to come up with a better solution.

Communication is vital for success in any enterprise. When team members communicate with each other to accomplish common goals, relations improve, and the environment becomes more positive. Each team member eventually develops the skill of Listening, one of the major success mantra. It is said that “one speaks what he/she knows, but listens what he/she may not know”. It leads to better bondage amongst the team members.

Another significant benefit of working together as a team is that there is less ill-will between its members. Each member of the team leaves aside their ego and what he/she has advised in favour of the best alternative. Everyone is more motivated to work better to achieve the objectives. Such an environment minimizes delays and increases productivity.

When people with different capabilities come together as a team, the final outcome is far greater than the sum of any individual effort.

When you become part of a team, you benefit from the knowledge and experience of other members. You will develop new skills and gain perspectives that you may not even have imagined, and add to your overall value.

Whether you are already working in an organization or a student preparing to enter the corporate world, without teamwork, you will not reach anywhere. Success always comes when all team members believe each other and synchronize work process. You must realize that with effective teamwork, you can taste success in any field of life easily.
